At the Witsand Nature Reserve in the Northern Cape stunning white sand dunes stand out in contrast to the red dunes that surround them. These white dunes are also known as the Kalahari Roaring Sands due to the sounds they make under certain conditions. The Witsand system as it is today, is situated approximately 1200 m above sea level and comprises a combination of linear and parabolic dunes which vary between 20 m and 30 m in height. The dunes run a length of 9 km in a NE - SW direction and are up to 5 km wide.
