The Loeriesfontein Windmill Museum is one of only a few museums around the world which has windmills used for pumping water from wells on display. These windmills are also known as windpumps and a wide variety of different makes and ages were carefully reassembled on this old school yard for display. The museum is part of the Fred Turner Museum. This in turn is dedicated to the culture and historical way of life of the old Trek Farmers of the Namaqualand. The museum has a realistic display of a typical Trek Farmer wagon, tent, bedding, 'kook skerm' and various tools. The Fred Turner Museum is situated inside an old Baptist church where hundreds of historical items from the region can be found. These include kitchenware, photo, clothes, tools and many more. The museum is only open by appointment and a list of telephone numbers of locals who will show you around and share their knowledge of the area is listed at the entrance gate. See the pictures for more details. During the busy flower season between August and September the museum is open and an old fashioned skerm with clay bread oven is used to bake fresh farm bread for visitors. The windmill museum is probably the only of its kind in Africa and only a couple of similar museums exist around the world. Other museums dedicated to windmills used for pumping water are: Shattuck Windmill Museum, Oklahoma USA American Wind Power Centre and Museum, Texas USA Windmill Museum Alberta, Canada.
