Trail Start/End Southern Start Of Swartberg Pass (868m)

ID: w135443 View large map

Located in South Africa :: Western Cape (Klein Karoo)
Category: Road Marker :: Trail Start/End

The Swartberg pass runs from Oudtshoorn in the south and Prince Albert in the north. To be exact there are several passes that run through the Swartberg Range. When it rains the road can be dangerous as it is not tarred, but has a spectacular view of the Klein and Groot Karoo. There are hundreds of species of plants found on the Swartberg which makes it very interesting. Another noticeable thing is on the hairpin bends there is dry stone work supporting it. There is a tarred road to the east at Meiringspoort which provides road transit along the river through the Swartberg. Meiringspoort runs out into De Rust and is also a sensational drive with rock formations; this road is also used for annual half marathons and ends at De Rust. There is also an annual Swartberg Pass Half Marathon hosted by Prins Albert. The race is usually held the same time as the Olive Festival which is the first Sunday in May.
