There are 2 trails available, 52km in length, and would take 6 to 7 hours to complete. Suitable for a 4X2 vehicle with diff lock, low range gears are required to complete this trail, the vehicle needs good ground clearance, it is a self-drive trail although there are trail guides available, but it is not obligatory. Rescue services and GPS waypoints are available. There is camping facilities, covered accommodation, shop and swimming. Skurweberg is a holiday farm and lies in a beautiful valley along the upper Fish River in the rugged Roggeveld Mountain range. The directions to get there are quite simple. From Matjiesfontein, drive to Sutherland, turn left roughly 2km before Sutherland and continue for 48km until you reach the Skurweberg turn-off. From the moment you reach the farm with its lovely guest cottage, you know that you are in for a treat. Driving at Skurweberg caters for all skill levels. You can opt for a gentle, scenic drive, enjoying the fauna and flora and magnificent mountain views, or the more adventurous Baboon Trail (which in truth is more of an obstacle course with escape routes. The main trail leads down the Skuins voetpad and then returns via the Ouberg Pass. The excellent route map's trail challenges are marked green, blue and red in order of difficulty. The difficult sections include serious rocky ascents. The area along the rivers includes water, sand and mud, but most of the terrain is rocky. With names like Banggat, Granny's Bum and Hotrock you will certainly test your off-roading skills to the limit. If you have enough time, try the Sneeukrans Trail on an adjoining farm - ideal for 4x2s. Both trails are circular. The views from the route into the mountains are guaranteed to take your breath away and if you have never experienced the beauty of the Karoo, this is your chance. Witjan and Elsa have also placed small markers to indicate the different plant species found in the Karoo, which has one of the richest plant diversities in the world. There is a fully equipped, self-catering Skurweberg Guest House which sleeps 9 people in comfort. Every need is catered for, including a garden with a horse paddock and shade. The grassed campsite has shade, electricity, ablutions and a lapa that could hold hundreds! There is also the fully equipped, self-catering Winteroord Guest House if you are wary of snow in winter. This is an extremely well-thought out trail for the whole family, with typical Karoo farm life at its best. It's in an area steeped in history and cries out for exploration. If you can acquire Lawrence Green's book Karoo, it will enrich your experience when you take some of the back roads and get to know this fascinating area. Activities includes hiking, mountain-biking, a mini animal farm for children, stargazing and paragliding. (Information supplied by DriveOut Magazine).
