The Augrabies Falls National Park is close to Upington, a large town in the Northern Cape. These magnificent falls pressing through a narrow rock ravine, remains the main attraction of the Northern Cape.
Few sights are as awesome or a sound as deafening as water thundering down the 56m Augrabies Waterfall when the Orange River is in full flood. The road to Augrabies entrance gate is tarred but the internal roads are gravelled suitable for a sedan vehicle.
The Augrabies Waterfall is named after the Khoi word 'Aukoerebis' meaning Place of Great Noise. The 55 383ha reserve is home to springbok, gemsbok and giraffe, along with spectacular views over the Orange River and Falls.
The park has gravel and grassed caravan sites. Hot summers and cold nights during winter. January to April is the rainy season. March to October has the nicest weather, and is the best time to visit the park, and is after the summer rains which will provide water for the falls.
Motorbikes are allowed in the camping and self-catering areas, but you are not allowed to go into the actual park area with a motorbike.
The waterfalls are within walking distance (250m) from the main buildings (reception/shop area). There are 6 viewing decks along the gorge.
