Hopetown is located at the edge of the Great Karoo, near the Orange River. The first diamond discovered in South Africa was found here. After the initial discovery, another was made, the 83,5 carat Star of Africa diamond that started the great diamond rush in South Africa. The town was established in 1850 when a handful of Settlers claimed ground, and a church was soon built. The town was alive with the hustle and bustle of fortune seekers looking for the next big diamond discovery. It became a vital stop and supplier to the Diamond Field, but as railways were built, the demand for accommodation and horseman in town quieted down and Hopetown became a quiet deserted little place. It saw some action during the Anglo Boer War with a battle near the town of Houtkraal. Today Hopetown serves the surrounding fruit, stock and potato farms. Popular activities in the area include white water rafting, hiking or game viewing in the Gazella Game Reserve.
