Description [ correction ]

The Kgalagadi region is tucked away in the south-western corner of Botswana. The Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park forms the most significant part of this region, but the area north of the park towards Hukuntsi offers some remote areas for the adventurous and self-sufficient overlander. The Botswana side of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park between South Africa and Botswana can only be accessed by 4x4 and the camps are unfenced, allowing a greater wilderness camping experience with wildlife being able to pass through. The park is famous for predators like the black-mained lions, gemsbok and bat eared foxes that can be seen hunting for insects. There is also an abundance of birdlife to be enjoyed. The pans fill with water during the rainy season and their hard surface layer ensures that the water remains in the pans and is not immediately absorbed. These pans are of great importance to the wildlife, which obtain valuable nutrients from the salts and the grasses of the pans. Some of the earliest travellers referred to this dry area as Thirstland, translated into Setswana as Kgalagadi.

“Kgalagadi Transfrontier was originally the Kalahari Gemsbok National Park (in South Africa) and the Gemsbok National Park (in Botswana), but now it's one 36 000 square kilometre, cross-border reserve. It is known for the gemsbok herds and black-maned lions. Kgalagadi means "place of thirst" which is fairly appropriate as there is annual rainfall of only 200mm. This also causes the animals there move around much larger areas than in other reserves due to the scarcity of food.” - Chris Smit, 2009/12/09
