Category: Scenic Routes :: Mountain Pass

The Bezuidenhouts Pass is a gravel mountain pass situated in KwaZulu Natal between Harrismith and Bergville, in the district of the Sterkfontein Dam. The pass starts at 1349m ASL and summits at 1751m and is 5 km long. The pass is very remote, with very little usage and a 4x4 is recommended although not necessary for a vehicle with good ground clearance. It takes one between 60 and 90 minutes to cover the 5km long pass. Remember to drop your tyre pressures to around 1,0 to 1,2 bar to prevent punctures and improve traction. The pass is more downhill from Harrismith side, it offers excellent scenery. (Jul-2018)

Travelling Information

Reportedly this is quite a tough route but accessible with a 4WD vehicle with low range and diff locks and good ground clearance. Very slippery in sections and therefore not recommended when wet or raining. (Apr-14).

“We drove the pass on 21/07/2018. Was excellent scenery. Very beautiful. Drove from the Harrysmith side. So it is more downhill that way around and seems easier. Uphill will be more of a 4x4 challenge and very fun. We also drove Retiefs pass but Bezuidenhouds pass is more of a challenge and free. Done with a Fortuner and Patrol. ” - Tijmen van der Steenhoven, 2018/07/21

“Drove the pass on Friday 17/04/2014. Quite a tough route but accessible with a 4x4 vehicle with low-range and diff locks. Ground clearance is important! Traveled from Harrismith to Bergville i.e. down the pass. I would not recommend it if is wet or raining. Very slippery in sections. Was a very enjoyable experience.” - Hennie Marx, 2014/04/21
