Slagboom is all about peace and tranquillity on a beautiful valley farm, with abundant bird life and shy bushbuck. It lies nestled in the foothills of the Suurberge in a small valley bordering on the Addo Elephant Park and offers a guided trail. It features 36 km of well signposted and somewhat technical mountainous dirt driving that follows the natural contours of the land. The route is named after the battle of Slagboom that took place here many years ago. The routes are typical mountain farm roads, look out for cattle, which link up to a neighbouring farm used by the SA Police Service for 4x4 training. The route is moderate when dry, but a diff-lock is advisable. Ascents are quite steep in certain parts but the road surface has enough grip to keep even novices happy, dotted with steep ascents, descents, river crossings and cambers. If you find sections a bit tame, ask to do it in the opposite direction, which will guarantee a challenge. Slagboom offers self-catering accommodation in two farm-style cottages. There are also three exceptionally well-maintained campsites: Langman, set alongside sandstone cliffs on the banks of the White River; a bush camp for those wanting to put all their overland gear to the test; and Doopgat, with its own private little pond. Activities encompass anything that involves water and wildlife: fishing, swimming, canoeing, game-viewing, even hunting can be organised if that's your thing. Two hiking trails or Welsh ponies for kids. Visit the Addo crocodile farm and the Sir Percy Fitzpatrick Library.(Information supplied by DriveOut Magazine).
