Phabeni is the Sotho word for place of shelter. The new gate in the south-western corner of the Park, 12 Km east of Hazyview, resembles a thatched Swazi village It lies on the Phabeni River close to the confluence with the Sabie River. It is an alternative to using the Kruger or Numbi Gates. The road to Numbi gate is sometimes unsafe to travel on and is not recommended. The road to Kruger Gate, traverses numerous informal settlements with the attendant hazards of stray animals etc. The historical site where Joao Albasini lived had a trading post from 1846 till 1848 lies just off the road about 150 m east of the gate.
