Description

Sesriem is a very small settlement in the Namib Desert. It is known for the Sesriem Canyon which is about 4 km from the settlement itself. The canyon is the second most important attraction in the area after Sossusvlei. The name Sesriem (which means 'six belts' in Afrikaans) was given to the settlement by the settlers returning from the Dorsland Trek. They tied together six belts made of Oryx hide to lower buckets into the canyon to get water.
