Description [ correction ]

Windhoek is the capital and the social, economic and cultural centre of Namibia. It is also the biggest city in Namibia. The hot springs near today's city centre is what attracted people to the spot in the first place. Present-day Windhoek was founded on 18 October 1890, when Major Curt Von François fixed the foundation stone of a fort from where they could maintain order in the then German protectorate South-West Africa, now known as Namibia. After 1907 development accelerated as people migrated from the countryside to the city and there was a large influx of European settlers from Germany and South Africa. The German influence can still be seen today.
