THE PALMWAG CONSERVANCY COVERS an area of 400 000 hectares. Wildlife includes Hartman’s Mountain Zebra, giraffe, oryx, springbok and kudu. The predator population is the largest outside of the Etosha National Park, with lion, cheetah and leopard; as well as brown and spotted hyena. Birdlife is prolific and diverse with most of Namibia’s endemic species present. There is also a healthy population of desert-adapted rhino (managed by the Save the Rhino Trust) and elephant.

Damaraland sand frogs (Tomopterna damarensis) inhabit the Uniab Riverbed near Palmwag. They have reddish-brown
upperparts with dark patches, and white undersides. They have stout bodies and rounded snouts and their calls are a
series of high-pitched tut-tut notes, repeated at around seven per second. These frogs are only found in Namibia and
Southern Angola.

Palmwag is one of Kaokoland’s major attractions. Accommodation options vary from lodging and camping to staying at tented camps. Visitors can enjoy guided walks and game drives to observe the diverse range of free-roaming game. You can enjoy lion, elephant or rhino tracking with a qualified and experienced guide. Always wear proper hiking boots and neutral coloured clothing (not white, yellow or red) when you go for a guided walk. These animals have a keen sense of smell so do not spray perfume or deodorant on your body before your excursion.

DESERT ANIMALS:
If you are particularly interested in the rhino or elephant populations of this area, you can experience these desert dwelling animals in their natural environment at the Desert Rhino Camp.

FUEL:
Palmwag is a good place to refuel as supplies can be very unreliable further north.
Take note: Garage or Petrol cards will no longer be accepted as a legal tender for purchase of fuel, spares or repairs in Namibia.
Cash, Debit and Credit cards are legal payment instruments, but many fuel stations choose NOT to accept Debit and/or Credit cards. But generally credit cards are accepted at garages in bigger and touristy towns. Take extra cash with still in case!

VETERINARY CONTROL:
There is a Veterinary control gate where they check if you have meat.
