Sabie is a smallish town on the Sabie River, Mpumalanga, South Africa. The name of the river and the town, was derived from a Shangaan word that means fearful. Crossing the river was a dangerous occupation due to frequent floods and numerous crocodiles. The first payable alluvial gold in the Transvaal, was discovered in 1871 by Tom McLachlin on the slopes of Spitskop, about 10 km south-east of Sabie. Prospectors flocked to the area but soon left again when the gold began to peter out. Today, Sabie is a malaria free, quiet little town, noted for its timber industry and beautiful waterfalls. Sabie is about 350 km east of Johannesburg, within easy range of the Lowveld attractions like, Gods Window, Blyde River Canyon and the Kruger National Park.
