Nelspruit is well known for the production of citrus fruits, hence is the home for the citrus headquarters. The development of the town began when President Paul Kruger built a railway line in 1891 from Komatopoort and Delagoa (Maputo) Bay and named a railway station Nelspruit. Timber production, cattle ranching and citrus fruits production, tobacco and pecan nuts are some of the major farming activities performed. The various activities and attractions that can keep the visitors thrilled includes a thrilling garden outside the town hall, the National Botanic garden, bird watching, with more than 200 bird species.
