Dar-es-Salaam is located on a natural harbour, on the eastern coast of Africa. It is Tanzania's leading financial cor and serves as an important economic centre. In the 1860s, Sultan Sayyid Majid of Zanzibar began building a fishing village and turned it into a port centre. He named it Dar-es-Salaam (Haven of Peace in Arabic). Today it is one of East Africa’s most important ports and trading centers.

ROADS:
It was reported that it can take up 3 hour from Dar-es-Salaam to reach Chalinze, due to many heavy trucks and buses on the road, as well as numerous speed humps on the notorious Tanzam Highway. There are many trucks breaking down and as everywhere in Tanzania, the only warning of this, are the green branches that are cut and put on the road to alert you.
SAFETY:
One can explore the main CBD area on foot in daylight if cautious. You are advised not to wear bling, and its advisable to walk in a group of 4 or more. Do not venture into the CBD after 17:00 and stay away from the outlying areas.
