In 1960 the Helderberg Nature Reserve was proclaimed a reserve, it is 406-hectares and extends up to the Helderberg Mountain which is a height of 1 137m. The predominant vegetation is the Kogelberg Sandstone Fynbos, with 600 different plant species including Sugar bushes (Protea spp), Pincushions (Leucospermum spp) and Cone Bushes (Leucodendron spp). You will also find in the northern part of the reserve patches of Boland Granite Fynbos where the soil is more fertile, and Waboom (Protea nitida) can also be found. Restios and variety of Ericas and Watsonias are found in the wetter part of the reserve. Found grazing on the grass of the picnic area is a small group of Bontebok, and the favourite for children is some large Leopard Tortoises. These animals and shady trees have been introduced to the reserve. You will find Grey Duiker, Cape Grysbok, Steenbok, Mongoose, Angulate or Padloper Tortoises, naturally occurring in the area and maybe on occasion a snake can be seen. There are more than 170 bird species listed. (Updated Feb-18)
