Escarpment Gamsberg Escarpment

ID: w198235 View large map

Located in Namibia :: Namib-Naukluft  :: Gamsberg Area
Category: Land Mark :: Escarpment

The flat-topped Gamsberg Mountain is part of the Great Escarpment which separates the Khomas Highland to the east from the low-lying Namib Desert to the west. The mountain within the Gamsberg Nature Reserve resembles the famous Table Mountain in Cape Town and is 2 346m high.
The Gamsberg area is a stargazing mecca with clear skies and little-to-no light pollution. There are some great hiking trails in the reserve which offers awesome views of beautiful, unspoilt scenery.
The Gamsberg Pass is traversed by the C26, a gravel road. This pass is one of Namibia’s most popular, it's also the highest and longest. Its elevation and the fact that you overlook the Kuiseb River in the valley below makes it one of the most scenic 4x4 routes you can travel in Namibia. Because of its beautiful scenery, Gamsberg is sometimes called the Garden Route of Namibia.

The adventure of these two German geologists is told in Henno Martin's novel 'The Sheltering Desert'. Another historical point of interest is an old Schutztruppe well. These attractions can be found on the T4A GPS map.
