“The first attempt to build the pass was made between 1865 and 1880. The road from Robertson to McGregor was originally planned to continue through the mountains to Greyton, and then on to Cape Town. After reaching McGregor (Formerly called Lady Grey), funds ran out and the work was stopped. Various later attempts to rejuvenate the project, failed and the pass was never completed.” - Chris Smit, 2012/10/19
