This is a very small remote town situated in the mountains near Wupperthal. 'Esel' means donkey. There are no shops or services visible here. There is a guest house in the main road, and on exiting Eselbank at the north you might spot a lady selling teas and jams on the side of the road. This is a self-supporting village with residents farming with livestock and rooibos tea. Be careful of animals and children wandering around. (June 2016).
ACCESS:
From the south from the Matjiesrivier Nature Reserve, at least a 4X2 would be recommended. But proceeding onto Wupperthal in the north, and 4X4 is advised. The road gets a bit rocky in sections, and there is not much space for vehicles to pass each other. After rains you will have to pass through large water puddles and pools. (June 2016).
