The village of Mouille Point is situated between Granger Bay and Three Anchor Bay just outside the centre of Cape Town. The lighthouse is actually the Green Point Lighthouse, was built in 1824 and electrified in 1929. The lighthouse started off with only two oil lanterns to warn ships but now burns a warning light with a bright 850 000 candlepower that is visible to ships for 25 sea miles around Table Bay. This candy striped building has been declared a national monument as it is the oldest active lighthouse in South Africa. You can visit the lighthouse from Mondays to Fridays between 09:00 and 15:30. Entry fees are R15 for adults and R7.50 for children under 12. Mouille Point got its name from the breakwater that was built to reduce shipwrecks. 'Moilje' means breakwater in Dutch and it was later renamed by the French to 'Mouille'.
