Ouberg is a truly spectacular pass, with beautiful scenery, rising through 600 m of Roggeveld escarpment in a series of dramatic switchbacks. Pioneer farmers used this route for more than 80 years for their seasonal sheep trek up and down the mountain. Ouberg has a lovely view of the escarpment of the Roggeveld Mountain range, 45 km from Sutherland. It's also a very popular birding spot where you will find the African Rock Pipit, Pale-winged Starling and Cape Eagle Owls.
The road surface is not bad, a 4WD drive or a vehicle with a difflock is required for the trip up. There is one lookout point about halfway down, large enough to accommodate a number of vehicles.

Not advisable to drive this pass in wet weather! Make sure it is passable and the road is in good condition - there are not always warning signs when the pass has been closed from the other side for example.
“We drove this pass on 24th January, in error. We believe the pass had been closed in December after heavy storms that created complete washaways. It took us three and half hours to drive the actual pass, with many terrifying challenges and situations. We strongly suggest that you avoid this pass until the road has been repaired. People we met in Sutherland were amazed that we made it, but we had come the other way and there had been no warning signs whatsoever. The only positive is the massive respect the Suzuki Jimny deserves!” - Wendy Sachs, 2023/01/25
