The Swaarmoed Pass is located approximately 20 km North east of Ceres. The 8 km long tarred pass rises 445 vertical meters to summit at just over 1100 m ASL. It is the favourite access route to the snow fields on the highlands near Klondyke and Erfdeel farms, the latter perhaps better known as Matroosberg with a summit altitude of 2226m ASL - it is also the highest peak in the Western Cape. “The Swaarmoed Pass lies in the Matroosberg ,14 Km N/East of Ceres in the Western Cape Province of South Africa. The first 30 Km from Ceres is tarred and the next 13 Km consists of a well maintained gravel road. Ceres lies in the Warm Bokkeveld , with warm summers but wet and cold winters. In winter, if you drive up the Swaarmoed Pass for about 20 Km towards the Bo-Swaarmoed plateau, the chances are good that snow will be encountered. The Swaarmoed Pass is one of several passes that give access to the Koue Bokkeveld, area in the Bokkeveld Mountains. ” - Chris Smit, 2013/10/19
