“Kannaland is an alternative name for the Klein Karoo.” - Chris Smit, 2024/06/21

“The Klein-Karoo (Karoo is a Khoisan word for “dry thirst land”) is a semi-desert surrounded by the Swartberg, Outeniqua and Langeberg mountains. The region has succulents exclusive to South Africa and numerous examples of Bushman rock art. Route 62, is also known as the Mountain Route. Andrew Bain and his son, Thomas Bain were the engineers and constructors of several of the mountain passes on the route. Michell's Pass near Ceres, Bain's Kloof Pass near Wellington, Gydo Pass north of Ceres up the Skurweberg, Tulbagh Kloof (after the town of Tulbagh), Prince Alfred's Pass from Knysna to Uniondale, Tradouw Pass near Barrydale, Garcia's Pass from Riversdale to Ladismith, Cogmans Kloof, from Ashton to Montagu and Swartberg Pass from Oudtshoorn to Prince Albert. ” - Chris Smit, 2010/11/04
