Wilhelm Langschmidt, owner of the farm 'Grietjiesgat', where the village originated, named it after the German town Grabouw where he was born. Grabouw is the hub of the Elgin Valley, the largest single export fruit producing area in Southern Africa. It is known as the 'valley of apples' and the home of the popular Appletiser soft drinks.
