Springbok, on N7 national road which connects the Cape with Namibia, is the largest town in the Namaqualand area of the Northern Cape province of South Africa. Springbok lies in a narrow valley between the high granite domes of the Klein Koperberge at the western extremity of the N14, which connects it with Upington and Pretoria. The town was founded on the farm Melkboschkuil in 1852 so as to establish a copper mine. In 1862 the town of Springbokfontein was laid out. (The -fontein- was dropped in later years) During the Anglo- Boer the Boers under General Manie Maritz used the Klipkoppie at the town as a fort. It provided an excellent vantage point across the valley. Today the main revenue of the area, comes from tourism, mining activities and farming. Springbok is the centre of the wildflower region, and each spring, the town is over-run with tourists.

ROAD INFO:
The N14 from Upington to Springbok was reported to be in a good condition during February 2014.
There is a gravel route from Springbok to Alexander Bay, which is heavily corrugated. Since there are very few farmers on the stretch, the mine does not bother to scrape it on a regular basis. This road used to be very well kept at all times.
One needs to adapt your tyre pressure to the road condition and load, so it might help to blow your tyres down to under 1 bar on a road like this for example. (May-14).

Tow-in is for Uitkyk Motormark and Tow-in.
