The small settlement of Papendorp lies, 88km west of the N7, 280 Km north of Cape Town. The town, locally known as Viswater, overlooks the Olifant's River Estuary where the river enters the sea. It has a beautiful view over the wetlands and river with more than 180 bird species to be seen. The residents of Papendorp make their living from fishing in the estuary and from salt gathering at the nearby salt pans. Salt is still processed in the traditional way. Many fishermen's mud houses and a little church are still well preserved. For more information the visitors can contact the Matzikama Tourism Information Office.
