Swellendam is an average sized town, half way between George and Cape Town. It was named after a governor of the Cape, Hendrik Swellengrebel, and his wife, Helena Ten Damme. It is the fourth oldest town in South Africa, and boasts over 50 provincial heritage sites and a Mediterranean climate. Many of the buildings are made in the Cape Dutch architectural style.

June through August is the rainy season here. Swellendam has a small airstrip. The nearest international airport is Cape Town. George has a local airport. It is 2 hours drive to either of them.
