Sutherland lies 270 km North East of Cape Town in the Great Karoo of South Africa. It is the coldest place in the Republic. The largest telescope in the Southern Hemisphere, SALT (Southern African Largest Telescope), is 18 km outside of the town in the direction of Fraserburg. Opened on the 11th November 2005, it is so powerful that one could see a candle flame on the moon. Guided tours takes place Mondays to Fridays at 10h30 and 14h30, Saturdays at 11h30 and 14h30.

Travel info on the minor route between Sutherland and Merweville, via the Rammelkop Pass and onto the Karoo National Park: It was reported that during October 2013 this road condition was good, but with many manual farm gates to open and close on the Sutherland side. Going further towards the Karoo National Park, find out possibly from Sanparks website wrt flooding in the area and the conditions of the roads. It was reported that the road between Skurweberg and Sutherland was not that good in September 2013. There is a clinic, hospital no. for Sutherland Public Hospital.
