Lutzville, founded in 1923, is situated between the Atlantic Ocean on the west and the Olifants River inland about 280 km north of Cape Town Lutzville, was originally named Vleermuijsklip, a rocky outcrop and overhang just outside the town on the road to Strandfontein. This outcrop is now a national monument. The name Vleermuijsklip was later changed to Lutzville, in honour of John Lutz, an irrigation engineer. The Lutzville Wine cellar has excellent white and red wines, at affordable prices. The impressive Sishen Saldanha railway bridge just outside Lutzville was constructed across the Olifants River on the R363.
