Vioolsdrif is a village on the Orange River in the north-western part of the Northern Cape Province of South Africa. The name in Afrikaans means 'the ford (shallow river crossing) of the violin'. It is reportedly named after a Nama, Jan Viool (John Violin), who is said to have played the fiddle in these parts in the nineteenth century. A road bridge links Vioolsdrif, South Africa with the small village of Noordoewer in Namibia. The arid region is sparsely populated but the brilliant sandstone cliffs are worth seeing. Crops, such as dates and melons are grown under irrigation from the Gariep River. Vioolsdrif has several campsites and motels for motorists passing through the border. It is also an agricultural community with only one shop at the border and a few tourism establishments. Major shopping should be done at Springbok, before going on to Vioolsdrift. The town has some small shops, a population of less than a thousand people and not much by way of infrastructure. The town functions around the border post, with police station and customs clearing houses.
