SENDELINGSDRIF IS A BORDER CROSSING on the Orange River between Namibia and South Africa. The Namibian side has no facilities other than a small border post building but on the South African side of the river you’ll fi nd accommodation, fuel and a small shop.

CELLPHONE RECEPTION:
No cell phone reception inside the park.

EMERGENCY SERVICES:
There is not a police station here, but customs police. (+27(0)76 892 2387). No doctor or hospital, but a mine ambulance is available, the sister on duty can be reached at +27(0)82 8977 5474.

FERRY/PONT:
You have to use a pont to cross the river at this border crossing, it’s a memorable way to leave or enter Namibia!
At the time of writing (2023) this border post has been closed for quite some time, but it was said to re-open in the near future.

FUEL:
Take note: Garage or Petrol cards will no longer be accepted as a legal tender for purchase of fuel, spares or repairs in Namibia.
Cash, Debit and Credit cards are legal payment instruments, but many fuel stations choose NOT to accept Debit and/or Credit cards. But generally credit cards are accepted at garages in bigger and touristy towns. Take extra cash with still in case!

ROAD INFO:
Roads are badly corrugated, deflate tyres to around 1.6bar. Lots of rocky intersections in the park, be careful not to cut deflated tyres on rocks. Second spare wheel may be prudent.

SAFETY:
Travel with satellite phone if outside contact is required.

SERVICES:
There is no internet café, and tour services which are available must be booked in advance. No banks or ATMs. No tyre or mechanical repair.

SHOPS:
The shops sell only necessities, like bread, homemade biscuits and rusks, basic vegetables and fruit, tinned food, cooldrink, wine, beer, spirits, curios, limited meat, flour, sweets (chappies and lunch bars) and no gas.
Bundles of wood with blitz and matches can also be bought.
Most people do their shopping at Rosh Pinah, 25km away.

 Travel Tip!

The river is prone to flooding from December to April, so it always best to ensure the border post is operational before you leave. The road to Sendelingsdrif is seldom grated and can be bad.

“|Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier National Park Vital Information Climate Please note that heavy dew sometimes occur at night. The |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld climate is harsh and dry, with extreme temperatures of up to 53 degrees Celsius having been recorded in mid-summer. Activities should be restricted to early mornings and late afternoons. Nights are cool, but may become chilly during winter. Heavy night-time dew occurs in the park. Day Visitors Because of the great distance involved in getting to the park, day visitation is not recommended unless some form of accommodation is secured in the area. Petrol and diesel Diesel and 97 and Lead Replacement petrol are available at Sendelingsdrif. Note that Lead Free Petrol is not available. The nearest supply of Unleaded Petrol is at Alexander Bay - 80km. •Fuel Station hours: Everyday from 08:00 to 16:00 •Vehicle fuel is available in all parks (or is available on the park periphery. •South African legislation stipulates that fuel stations will accept legitimate petrol/fuel/garage/credit/debit cards or cash as a form of payment for any fuel purchase. Telephones A Public Phone (Coin Operated) is available at Sendelingsdrif. Cellular communication is not available in the Park. If you have international roaming you can call from a few spots around Sendelingsdrif on MTN Namibia (beware the bill). Office Hours 08:00 – 16:00 at Sendelingsdrif Hints & Tips •Insect Repellent is strongly recommended •Binoculars and cameras are a must •Cotton sheets will keep insects at bay. •Plastic refuse bags are essential as all rubbish must be removed on departure. •Firewood and kindling may not be collected in the park. •Gas cookers are recommended due to evening winds. •Extra spare wheel, tools, spares, enough food and extra water containers are essential. •Make sure that you always have a good supply of water. Fresh water is available at Sendelingsdrift. •Do not sleep on the bare ground as the park is ideal scorpion habitat. •Driving off indicated routes and outside camping sites is a serious offence. It is harmful to the park and dangerous to the visitor. •Scarves protect against dust and wet towels from extreme heat. Provide clothing for extreme temperatures. •No pets, generators or outboard motors permitted. •Picking of plants, removal of seeds, rocks, crystals or driftwood is an offence. “|Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier National Park Natural and Cultural History An international treaty, signed on 1 August 2003, incorporated the Ai–Ais Hot Springs Game Park in Namibia and|Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld National Park in South Africa, resulting in the establishment of the Ai-Ais/Richtersveld Transfrontier National Park. One of the main features of the combined park is the world’s second largest canyon – the Fish River Canyon. At Sendelingsdrift, on the South African side, a pontoon has been established to ferry people and vehicles across the Orange River.
