You have to use a pont to cross the river at this border crossing, it’s a memorable way to leave or enter Namibia! The pont operates the same hours as the border post, 08:00-16:15, and costs R160 per vehicle and R60 for a trailer (2019 pricing).
Take note: Garage or Petrol cards will no longer be accepted as a legal tender for purchase of fuel, spares or repairs in Namibia.
Cash, Debit and Credit cards are legal payment instruments, but many fuel stations choose NOT to accept Debit and/or Credit cards. But generally credit cards are accepted at garages in bigger and touristy towns. Take extra cash with still in case!
Roads are badly corrugated, deflate tyres to around 1.6bar. Lots of rocky intersections in the park, be careful not to cut deflated tyres on rocks. Second spare wheel may be prudent.
Travel with satellite phone if outside contact is required.
There is no internet café, and tour services which are available must be booked in advance. No banks or ATMs. No tyre or mechanical repair.
Nearby Border Control point.
The shops sell only necessities, like bread, homemade biscuits and rusks, basic vegetables and fruit, tinned food, cooldrink, wine, beer, spirits, curios, limited meat, flour, sweets (chappies and lunch bars) and no gas.
Bundles of wood with blitz and matches can also be bought.
Most people do their shopping at Rosh Pinah, 25km away.
Tourist info is available at Sanparks reception (+27(0)27 831 1506).
Border post: +264(0)63 274 926.
Occasionally, the pont is out of action so call ahead if your travel plans rely on this border post being functional. Particularly during December to April, when the river is prone to flooding.
