The village of Matjiesfontein is situated just East of the N1 almost halfway between Cape Town (240km) and Beaufort West (220km) in the Western Province of South Africa. Matjiesfontein is the Afrikaans for Fountain of Little Mats and was founded in 1884 by the legendary Scot, James Douglas (Jimmy) Logan. It was officially opened in November 1889 with great pomp and splendour. The guests were leading politicians and VIPs who had reached the village by train from Cape Town. During the 1890s, many celebrated people visited Matjiesfontein, such as Randolph Churchill, the Duke of Hamilton and the Sultan of Zanzibar. During the Anglo-Boer War (1899 - 1902) Matjiesfontein became a British stronghold, and the hotel, The Milner Hotel was turned into a military hospital. When Logan died in 1920, David Rawdon bought the hotel and restored the whole village. It was declared a National Historic Monument in 1970.
