Orania, situated on the R369, roughly halfway between Petrusville and Van der Kloof, was built in 1970 for construction workers on the Orange River Project. During 1990, Carel Boshoff, the son-in-law of former South African prime minister Hendrik Verwoerd, and about 40 Afrikaner families, bought the dilapidated town for about R1000000 It has a caravan park on the banks of the Orange river.

Orania is an Afrikaner town located on the banks of the Orange River in the beautiful Upper-Karoo. This town is clean and hospitable, but the town is unique due to the fact that all labour is done by Afrikaners - from the bank manager to the builder, all work in Orania is done by Afrikaners! This town is sort of "privately" managed with the Orania Town Council managing the town development and infrastructure. This town also have own radio station, the Orania Radio Station. For more information about the town visitors can contact the Orania Movement Offices which is an information office for the town. (Jan-16).

“Most impressed: Atmosphere calm and restful, friendly people. Was going to overnight but ended up staying for two days. Some intersting building techniques such as using straw bales. Harold Churchill Augusat 2013.” - Harold Churchill, 2013/08/19

“We visited the Town again on 19 and 20 Nov. 2011. Everything is clean and neat as ever. There is a new ‘Honesty Kiosk’at the Resort where you take firewood and/or ice, and leave the money in a plastic dish. No losses have been noted. Orania has a population with some fairly rich and many poor to very poor people, yet there is no crime. I wonder why? ” - Chris Smit, 2011/11/24
