Monument/Statue/Memorial Jan Joubert Memorial (Rooidrom)

ID: w137595 View large map

Located in Namibia :: Kaokoland
Category: Attraction :: Monument/Statue/Memorial

Rooi Drom had its start as a 45 gallon Caltex drum put there by Ben van Zyl as a way of storing petrol till when next he would pass there and need it. Its purpose however changed to that of being a road marker and this is when it got its name. After being stolen by the Herero tribes, Chris Eyre replaced it, but after having it stolen again it was filled with gravel to ensure its safety. Since then, a phone and a delivery food menu had been placed there but also then destroyed later on.

“What a beautiful tribute to Jan Joubert. Thank you so much, Mike Lauterbach and friends. May all your finesses go right.” - Chris Smit, 2023/06/13

“In 2006, Wouter and I organised to repaint rooidrom, adding the coordinates in decimal degrees. Jan Joubert had a long standing argument that coordinates should be notated in degrees minutes and seconds, and not in decimal degrees, as is the modern standard. He had not repainted the drum for a while, as he normally did once every 2 years, so now was the time to repaint it, and play the trick in adding the coordinates of the drum in decimal degrees. Alas, he was murdered in June 2006, 3 months before our planned repainting. On 10 September 2006 (nearly 3 months after Jan's death), our travelling party stopped at rooidrom and repained the drum, complete with the coordinate system in decimal degrees. Unfortunately we could not tell him about it, but drank a toast to the great man instead. RIP. The repainting team was (left to right) Chard and Birgit Black, Gudrun and Mike Lauterbach and Janine and Peter Zagel. Hopefully the repainting of the drum will continue in future, in honour of Jan Joubert.” - Mike Lauterbach, 2023/06/12

“Beste Len Loader. By Sesfontein was daar basies net die Fort. - Pieter DE JONGH, 2015/05/03
