Description [ correction ]

Lake Otjikoto is a natural sinkhole and is very popular among experienced divers. It is the smaller of two permanent natural lakes that was created by a collapsing cave. The diameter of the lake is 102 m and its depth is undetermined. Apparently the German Schutztruppe dumped war materials into the lake during World War I to prevent the South African and British troops from using them, just before they surrendered. Most of the larger pieces have been recovered and are displayed at the Tsumeb Museum but at least two cannons and some ammunition are still in the lake and can be viewed with a special diving permit.
