Heroes Acre is the official war memorial of Namibia. It was built on one of the hills just south of Windhoek to foster a spirit of patriotism and nationalism. This majestic and impressive memorial is visible from the B1 highway and will definitely serve to pass on the legacy to future generations. It is built as a symmetric polygon with marble obelisk and a bronze statue of the 'unknown soldier' at its centre. At the back of the statue is a mural that visually portrays the history of the struggle for freedom. The site contains parade grounds and a grandstand for 5 000 people. The burial site consists of 174 tombs which are not all occupied currently. At inauguration in 2002 nine national heroes and heroines were identified. For each of them a tombstone with name and photo has been erected, although they are not all buried here. In later years several additional people have been declared national heroes and buried here. .
