Rock Art Brandberg White Lady Painting (Do Not Touch)

ID: w139673 View large map

Located in Namibia :: Damaraland  :: Brandberg Area
Category: Attraction :: Rock Art

The 'White Lady' Bushmen painting on Mount Brandberg was discovered in 1918. It is one of a rich gallery of rock art on the mountain and among the most accessible to tourists. The figure is about 40cm tall and is central to some sort of precession in which one or two of the figures have animal features. In her right hand is a flower (or an ostrich egg cup) and in her left hand she holds a bow and arrows. Unlike the other figures in the group this one has been painted white from below the chest. Some rock art specialists is of the opinion that the lady has elements of ancient Mediterranean origin.

Hike to the White Lady Rock Art site. 5 kilometres, approximately 1 hour 25 minutes walking time in total. Moderate hike with a few short technical rocky sections. In high temperatures the flies are relentless, and literally follow you. For some face protection wear a buff, to cover most of your face. The guides offer a great deal of info on the general location and rock art site. Cost to do the hike is R80 pp. Well worth it.(Visitors description).
