THIS REGION IS HOME TO Namibia’s capital, Windhoek; a large, modern city which boasts a mix of modern and old colonial architecture. Many of the tourist attractions in the town’s centre hark back to the German presence in Namibia in the 1900s. This is a lush, hilly and clean city, and its inhabitants are warm and friendly. You can easily spend two to three days here as there is lots to see and do.
Windhoek has lots to offer visitors so you’ll find everything you need, even long-term storage facilities for your vehicle. Many overseas visitors who regularly visit Namibia, store their vehicles on one of the surrounding farms. These ‘vehicle hotels’ offer good security, are spotlessly clean and have workshops. They’ll even start and run your vehicle regularly.
Because of its high altitude, Windhoek can get extremely cold at night, especially in winter. The landscape around Windhoek consists mainly of dense acacia growth, and swaying grass which appears white in the late afternoon sun.
The Central Namibia plateau is enclosed by two deserts, the Namib to the west and the Kalahari to the east.
MAJOR ATTRACTIONS
Windhoek attractions include Christuskirche (Christ Church), Alte Feste Museum (old German Fort), Namibia Crafts Market, State House, Genocide Memorial, Independence Museum and Gibeon Meteorites Display.
Attractions on the city’s outskirts include German War Graves and Heroes’ Acre. The Daan Viljoen Game Reserve offers hiking and mountain biking trails.
Hardap is Namibia’s largest dam; the Hardap Resort is a popular stop-over for self-drive travellers.
Arnhem Cave, which is said to be inhabited by six different bat species. Bitterwasser Pan is about 3 km wide and used as a glider port during the summer months.
