The Petrified Forest Area is located near Twyfelfontein. This is part of the Petrified Forest Area, there are several other sites in this area along the C39 where one can find petrified forests. Not all of these are equally well protected. The petrified forest are believed to be created from trees that were carried by floods all the way from central Africa and then covered with layers of sediment to preserve the wood which eventually became fossilized and later exposed again. All of this is believed to have happened over a period of 280million years. The site is managed by the National Heritage Council of Namibia and trained guides will take you on a guided tour of the 'forest'. (Updated Jun-15)
