Covering an area of 215 000 hectares, NamibRand Nature Reserve is one of the largest private nature reserves in Southern Africa. It was established in 1984 by J A Brückner, a Windhoek businessman, who integrated 15 former sheep farms into one single conservation unit to help conserve the ecology and wildlife of the south-western Namib Desert. To date, seventeen former livestock farms have been rehabilitated into a single continuous natural habitat.

The predominant large mammals in the reserve are oryx and springbok. Other large mammals include kudu, Hartman's and Burchell's zebra, giraffe, klipspringer, steenbok, hartebeest and baboon. Predators include leopard, spotted and brown hyena, black-backed jackal, aardwolf, bat-eared fox, Cape fox, African wildcat, caracal and genet. To date more than 150 bird species have been identified.

Traveller Description

This upmarket nature reserve isn’t cheap but seeing as the number of guest beds here is restricted to one per 1 000
hectares, exclusivity is guaranteed. Presently, there are fi ve concessionaires conducting tourism operations in the reserve.
The reserve can be explored by 4WD or on foot, as well as from the air by hot air balloon or with scenic flights.
Other activities offered in the reserve include dune boarding and horse riding.
