This is the busiest border between Mozambique (Ressano Garcia) and South Africa (Lebombo), also known as Komatipoort. Border is sometimes open 24 hours a day for passengers and between 06h00-24h00 (GMT+2) time guideline for commercial vehicles during peak periods and holiday season, Normal times are between 06h00-24h00 (GMT+2). You will need a Passport valid for 6 months, an entry visa except if from South Africa, Malawi or Mauritius and the registration book or docs for your vehicle, valid driver's license, 3rd party insurance party papers etc. Please visit the AA website for more detailed info on requirements. BORDER CROSSING TIME:
Reportedly in March 2013 it took a few hours to cross this border because of the SA migration team striking for better salaries. (Mar-13). But in general it was reported that on a normal day it should not take more than 30 to 45 minutes to cross.
HARASSMENT:
Runners and helpers do bother you to help you to get through quicker, by expecting tips, but you are advised to kindly decline by saying 'Nao Obregado' - 'No thanks!' in Portuguese. Do not hand your passport to anyone except to the officials at the counters for stamping.
INSURANCE:
If entering Mozambique, you have to buy car insurance at the border, or you can buy it in South Africa at Outdoor Warehouse. (2014).
TIP (TEMPORARY IMPORT PERMIT):
TIP = Temporary Import Permit (for your vehicle), is purchased at the border post.
TRAVEL DOCUMENTS:
Just ensure all your 3rd party papers and car papers are 100% and that all travelling persons are available for passport view and stamps. (Apr-13).
