The Praça dos Heróis Moçambicanos is a large square commemorating the Mozambican War of Independence that ended with a ceasefire between Portuguese forces and armed guerrillas of the Mozambique Liberation Front (FRELIMO) in 1974, and resulted in Mozambique’s independence from Portugal on 25 June 1975. A 95-m long mural remembers the fallen soldiers, while a white marble structure in the middle holds the remains of heroes such as Eduardo Mondlane (founding president of FRELIMO) and Samora Machel, Mozambique’s first president.
Photographs are prohibited, and the public may only visit the square on Heroes Day, the anniversary of the assassination of Eduardo Mondlane on 3 February 1969. (Feb-18)
