Beira is the second largest city in Mozambique. It was established in 1890 by the Portuguese and soon supplanted Sofala as the main port in the Portuguese-administered territory. In the 1960's Beira was a popular holiday destination among white Rhodesians. A reminder of this era is the Grande Hotel. After independence from Portugal in 1975, many white ethnic Portuguese left the city. During the Civil War the Grande Hotel was sadly left in near-ruins and floods in 2000 devastated Beira. Despite renovations Beira still appears somewhat tatty.
