Inhambane is an attractive and historical city and is one of the important tourist towns of Mozambique. It offers coconut palm beaches, colourful markets with fresh fish and vegetables, beautiful architecture and an atmosphere that reflects its diverse past stretching back to the eleventh century. Arab, Persian and Portuguese (Vasco da Gama) traders visited Inhambane in the late 1500s. The port of Inhambane was a major centre for ivory and slave trade as well as whaling. Enjoy a drink at the Inhambane harbour and watch the dhows (local sailing boats) sail back and forth to Maxixe (pronounced Masheesh). It is the main centre for resorts and beaches like Tofo and Barra.
