Located in Zambia :: Great North  :: Kapiri Mposhi
Category: Places :: Town

Booking

This busy town sits at the junction of the T3 highway (between Lusaka and the Copperbelt province) and the T2 highway (to northern Zambia and Tanzania). It sees a constant flow of trains, traffic and people at all hours of the day. The town is frequented by backpackers who tend to stay at Twenty Two Lodge in town or catch a taxi into Lusaka. It’s also the southernmost railway station for TAZARA, the Tanzania-Zambia railway line, which runs to Dar-es-Salaam so it sees a lot of truck traffic too. It’s at this town that the Great North and Copperbelt regions meet so it’s a congregational point for traffic from here to Lusaka.

Traveller Description

The name Kapiri Mposhi means ‘hills of refuge’ and refers to the hills north of the town, where it’s rumoured that a huge bird lives which in historical times provided refuge to the Swaka tribe of the region.

 Travel Tip!

If you’re unable to continue your journey in your vehicle, you might consider the Mukuba Express Train which runs between Kapiri Mposhi and Dar-es-Salaam (Tanzania) every couple of days. If you’re driving from here to Great North this is probably the last place you will be able to fill up with Zambia’s version of Low Sulphur Diesel. Twenty Two Lodge may allow you to camp in your own vehicle by opening up a room for you to use for ablutions.
