Seronga is situated on the eastern side of the Okavango Panhandle, on the northern edge of the Delta. With a population of almost 3 000 people, it's the largest village in the region and the commercial hub for the surrounding communities.

Traveller Description

Seronga is the home of the Okavango Poler's Trust, registered in 1998. This is a community-run organisation that provides an affordable way to explore the Okavango Delta. Local people are trained as guides and 'polers', and take guests out on the Delta on a mokoro (traditional dug-out canoe). The Trust can be contacted via the details provided on the next page; take note that the office isn't always manned so several attempts may be necessary to reach them by phone.

Okavango Houseboats operate from Seronga, from where they explore the main channel of the Okavango River. Fishermen can try their hand at bream or tiger fishing, while the game to be seen is mainly hippos and crocodiles and, if you are lucky, the shy sitatunga which hides between the reeds. The area is a birdwatcher's paradise offering sightings of numerous specials such as the White-backed Night Heron, African Skimmer, and the ever-elusive Pel’s Fishing Owl.

Travelling Information

ACCESS:
The town is reached by a 96km dirt road that heads south from the Mohembo Ferry, near the border with Namibia. An off-road vehicle is required as this route often features deep sand. Alternatively, you can fly in from Maun via a charter flight, making use of the small airstrip nearby.

ACCOMMODATION:
The only accommodation in Seronga is Mbiroba Camp, owned by the Okavango Poler’s Trust, which takes the form of rustic chalets and camping, or on one of the houseboats mentioned above.

FERRY:
Travellers to and from Seronga, can make use of the local ferry (pedestrian-only water taxi) running between Seronga and Sepopa. This avoids travelling on the dirt road between Seronga and the Mohembo ferry, as well as the badly-potholed tar road between Shakawe and Sepopa.

FUEL:
There’s no fuel stop in Seronga; the fuel sold in containers is used for the boats.

HEALTHCARE:
There's no hospital but they do have a clinic. Number for Clinic +267 687 6805.

SHOPS & SERVICES:
A small co-operative sells basic supplies and a local shop sometimes has beer for sale.

There is also limited electricity here. No tarred roads.

USEFUL NUMBERS:
Okavango Poler’s Trust: +267 687 6861 or [email protected].

 Travel Tip!

Travellers on the transit road between Seronga and Savute or Linyanti need to note that this is a very rough 4x4 track in a very remote area; the track is often covered in deep water from the Selinda Spillway so travelling solo isn’t advisable. The road runs through private concession areas which are usually reached by plane - leaving the transit road without a permit to travel in the private concession areas is not allowed.
