North of the Gemsbok National Park (now part of the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park), the Kgalagadi region's vast grasslands supports mostly cattle ranching - the third largest industry in Botswana after diamond mining and tourism. Hukuntsi is one of four large villages located in this remote region, it's home to the Rural Administration Centre of the Botswana Government. The majority of the 5 000+ population here are Bangologa people.
Traveller DescriptionA 110 km tar road stretches east from Hukuntsi to the Trans-Kalahari Highway, which it joins at the village of Kang. The town is surrounded by pans that fill with water after the rains, drawing small mammals and birds of prey; sightings are numerous along the Hukuntsi-Kang road. The flat, open plains make for very cold winter nights and sweltering hot summer days.
