Gweta is a small village on the A3, on the northern edge of the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans, some 75km east of the Nxai Pans National Park and Makgadikgadi Pans National Park entrance gates. It's conveniently situated for exploring these parks and is considered to be the gateway to the Makgadikgadi Salt Pans.
Traveller DescriptionGweta is small, so don't count on stocking up here before continuing to the Makgadikgadi Pans or Nxai Pan National Park. The local shops sell basic food produce only, so it is best to stock up in Maun, Nata or Letlhakane. The same goes for fuel, as availability here is unreliable. There's a police station and a hospital with a pharmacy, but no private doctor.
Keep in mind that you are not allowed to take raw meat or dairy products from Maun east, past the Makalamabedi Veterinary Control Point towards Gweta.

During the rainy season, the Makgadikgadi Pans fill, and the roads become very treacherous. The track from Gweta to Lekhubu Island is very scenic as you cross Ntwetwe Pan, but is better suited to the more adventurous travellers. During the dry season, this road can be bumpy, due to old mud puddles, and the first 20 km has deep sand and is bushy.
Sometimes the tar road between Gweta and Nata is slow as the potholes get bad after the rainy season. They do fill up the potholes from time to time. The best is to enquire about the roads around Gweta from one of the lodges or Facebook groups. They will give you up-to-date information.
Both Gweta Lodge and Planet Baobab offer guided tours to the Makgadikgadi Pans as well as cultural visits to the local village. Don’t miss out on the walk with meerkats!
It is said that the average age of the trees at Planet Baobab is over 4 000 years. The funky bar has an interesting chandelier and is a popular watering hole for some local characters.
