Booking

Tsabong was a refuge for people fleeing early tribal wars and the name means precisely that, 'a place where people found refuge'.

Today Tsabong is home to more than 10 000 people and is the capital and administrative centre of the Kgalagadi district. It has four primary schools, a number of clinics, and a primary hospital. Northwest of Tsabong, the Tsabong North Diamond Project is operated by Pangolin Mines, exploring one of the largest kimberlite fields in the world; this consists of 85 kimberlite pipes of which 18 is known to carry diamonds.

Traveller Description

Tsabong is 27km north of the McCarthy's Rust border post and is a convenient place to stock up on supplies. Until recently, police patrolled the area on camels; if you're lucky you may see still these animals standing in the shade of a tree. You can have a more 'hands on' experience with them by enjoying a camel ride at Tsabong Eco-Tourism Camel Park; this facility also offers good accommodation in the form of chalets and campsites.

MECHANICAL REPAIRS:
Contact AB Spares in Tsabong Tel: +267 654 0885 for batteries, tyres, shocks, gaskets and bearings.

Also try Rusty at Tsabong Motors Tel: +267 654 0217/ +267 74 576 083; [email protected]. Travellers reported how he managed to modify pads for their 100 Series Land Cruiser, and 4000kms later, still working perfectly. You will find Rusty across from the Shell station in the centre of town. (June 2018).

SHOPS & SERVICES:
The town has several fuel stations, banks, a motor spares shop, and a clean and well-stocked Sefalana Supermarket (previously Shoppers Supermarket), where travellers can stock up on supplies before heading into Botswana’s interior.
For those who require more information for their travels, there is a Botswana Tourism Office opposite the supermarket.

 Travel Tip!

From Tsabong, it’s 112km to the Mabuasehube entrance gate into the Kgalagadi Transfrontier Park.
The first 73km is a fair gravel road but then the road becomes a deep sandy track which requires 4WD. Tyre deflation is
also strongly recommended. The last 39km to the entrance gate will slow down your travel time considerably.
